Captain Christopher Newport was the English commander of the three ships that settled colonial Jamestown in 1607. A friend and staunch ally of Captain John Smith, the city of Newport News is named for him.

Over one million visitors are expected to visit the monument during the 400th

Anniversary of the Founding of Jamestown.
