Life Plus One/Half Scale
Once the nightlife capital of Asia, Shanghai hopes to revive some of its former glamor with a downtown theater district. Called Theater Avenue, city officials are touting it as Shanghai's answer to London's West End and New York's theater district. The street will link at least nine theaters.
Bronze busts of 19 world-renowned playwrights will line both sides of the avenue. The Shanghai government has commissioned Jon to sculpt a bust of American writer Eugene O'Neill, foremost American dramatist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936. His masterpiece, Long Day's Journey into Night (produced posthumously 1956), is at the apex of a long string of great plays, including Beyond the Horizon (1920), Anna Christie (1922), Strange Interlude (1928), Ah! Wilderness (1933), and The Iceman Cometh (1946).
This is Jon’s second sculpture commission in China.
